What is Uptown Movie Club?

Uptown Movie Club is a community-driven initiative to consistently bring neighbors together over a love of cinema while supporting the local businesses that make Uptown worth loving. We meet on the third Wednesday of every month at 7 PM at Lagoon Cinema, with a pre-movie meet-up at Mari's Watch Bar. We watch a film together, and discuss it afterward. Think of it like a book club, but you don't have to read the book.

How did Uptown Movie Club start?

Uptown Movie Club was born in April 2026 in a neighborhood meeting in the aftermath of Operation Metro Surge. Neighbors were encouraged to bring ideas to the meeting that would keep us connected AND help support Uptown businesses. Our founder Missy used her love of movies and marketing background and created the Uptown Movie Club. With the help of the Uptown community, we had our first event in June 2026 (over 200 people attended)!

How do you pick the movies and can I suggest a movie?

Our programming is selected by our volunteer team with one goal in mind: finding films that spark conversation and mean something to this community. That said, we are limited by what is available and what we are able to secure screening rights for, and as a brand new organization we are very much taking a crash course in how film licensing works. We plan on curating special movies (not normally shown at the Lagoon) each quarter (Mar/Jun/Sept/Dec). For the in between months, we choose from the five options already showing at the Lagoon.We welcome suggestions and would love to hear what you'd like to see. How is Uptown Movie Club funded?

Uptown Movie Club is self funded through ticket and merchandise sales, with one hundred percent of proceeds going directly toward future events. No outside funding, no corporate backing. Just neighbors investing in something they believe in.

We meet at Lagoon Cinema, 1320 Lagoon Ave, right in the heart of Uptown Minneapolis. We also encourage you to stop by Mari's Watch Bar before the show for a pre-movie meetup. Ticket holders receive a free drink. Come early and say hello.

Where can I buy tickets and why does the price vary per month?

Tickets are available through the button on our home page at uptownmovieclub.com. We recommend grabbing yours early, they go fast.Our quarterly special events (Mar/Jun/Sept/Dec) are $30/ticket because you get so much more! In addition to your pre-movie social drink and the movie + discussion, you also get an Uptown Movie  Club swag item. You also get a custom screening experience since the movie is curated for the evening and when available, we have special guests for the post-movie discussion. All profits go directly towards funding future events.For non-quarterly special event months, you simply purchase your ticket through Landmark's Lagoon Cinema website. Don't forget to sign up for their Loyalty program, it's a steal!

Can I donate to Uptown Movie  Club?

We are not currently set up to accept donations, but there are plenty of ways to support us. Show up to events, grab a t-shirt, follow us on Instagram and Facebook, sign up for our mailing list, or volunteer your time. Every bit helps.

Do the movies have closed captioning?

Inclusivity is important to us. Closed captioning availability depends on the individual film, but we are committed to doing everything we can to make our screenings accessible to everyone. Our favorite part of Uptown Movie Club nights is actually before and after the movie!Seeing people introduce themselves at the pre-movie social, talking about movies, ordering food, making plans to return....priceless.Running out of time every single event at the post-movie discussion because everyone has so many things to say about our shared experience....amazing.We encourage you to go to the movie regardless of whether or not you've heard of it or if it's "your type" of movie. Some of our favorite movies are ones we did not think we'd like so we encourage you to stay open minded and community focused!
